Kallskänken - Kalmar

With just three lunch dishes on the menu, we expected, and got, high quality. We tried the chicken w/ potatoes, and it was tender and rather inexpensive. Grab a cup of coffee or tea before you go, it's included.

On a one night stop on 7 Jul 2016 staying at the adjoining Hotell Hilda my spouse and I enjoy a gala grand opening meal which was prepared over outdoor grills, accompanied by an excellent selection of beer and wine, while surrounded by a very festive group of Kalmar natives and serenaded by local musicians. The meats and sides we ordered were exceptional in taste and portion. This all made for an excellent evening.

We visited this restaurant a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it, so naturally we wanted to return when we were all gathered in Kalmar again. However, we were very disappointed this time around. We had enjoyed delicious hamburgers on our previous visit, but were informed upon arrival that the restaurant had now become vegetarian. This was fine with us, as we all enjoy vegetarian food, but we found the portions to be very small. After our expensive meal, we all ended up going home to have a sandwich. The staff were rude and unhelpful, particularly the grumpy waiter who claimed we were late even though we had changed our booking time by half an hour earlier in the day. We were also told we could not order tap beer because the restaurant was short on large glasses, despite seeing other tables receiving tap beer. The waiter even refused to provide lemon in our coke because he didn’t have time to cut a slice. A chair even broke at a nearby table. When we asked for bread to go with our meal, we were told the bread was needed for a salad that wasn't even on the menu. Another waitress eventually brought us some bread, but it was clear the children were still hungry after finishing their small main meals. Although the dishes looked pretty and tasted good, they seemed more like side dishes than main meals at a respectable vegetarian restaurant.

The restaurant aims to serve the best burgers in the city, and we believe they have achieved that goal. The menu is small and the daily specials sell out quickly, but the burgers never disappoint. The halloumi burger (without meat) is especially delicious. The fries and desserts are also tasty. The only thing missing for us was a side salad option. The milkshakes are good, but more like smoothies according to American standards. The restaurant is a favorite among locals, with a small bar that only has 5 stools. It's recommended to make reservations, especially during peak tourist season.
