We had heard both good and bad things about the Auberge du Chateau in our short time in France so decided that the only way to judge was to see what it was like for ourselves. First off it is very easy to find, being just up the hill from the Magnificent Chateau de Pompadour and just across the road from the racecourse and it is perched on the edge of and overlooking what would have been the Chateau moat back in the day; but on a practical note it means there is also plenty of parking available in front of the Chateau. We went on a Wednesday lunchtime with our daughter and her family although we hadn’t booked and on arrival it was quite crowded, seemingly with workers on their lunch break. Nevertheless we were welcomed in and we took our seats at a corner table and waited for the fixed price menu options to arrive. We had heard about the restaurant terrace but on this particular lunchtime it wasn’t open, maybe because there were not enough staff available or possibly because it was overcast with a bit of a nip in the air that would have made sitting outside unpleasant.Unlike some French restaurants you might visit the décor here is understated. The walls are a mix of lime washed stone and grey wood panelling decorated with a couple of modern looking medieval type shields, there is stone floor and strings of spotlights above so it has a light and airy feel. In the front corner there is a stove for occasions when the body heat of the patrons is not enough. An added bonus here is that the staff do speak English and can explain things for you which is reassuring in places where the courses of the Menu du Jour are not on display anywhere. Although we declined any translation and went with what was offered. In our case a thick and tasty vegetable soup was first followed by Quiche and salad which we thought was the main course, but that was subsequently followed by copious quantities of pasta and meatballs together with Ham and Chips for the little one. (Ok not typically French but tasty nevertheless). We had to laugh as in line with many restaurants on both sides of the channel the so-called kids portions would feed a small army and it certainly got the adults talking that we should have ordered the kids meal for ourselves. Our little man made a good attempt to demolish it but dad and I had to help out with his ham slices while he happily devoured his chips. The Vin Blanc that was served during the meal was certainly palatable, as are many of the cheaper white wines in this neck of the woods. To round off lunch we had a kind of Apple Pie accompanied with Custard and followed by Coffee. Although not typically French cuisine with friendly service throughout our visit we were left with good impressions of the Auberge du Chateau to pass on to anyone we spoke to.
