Contribuir a la retroalimentaciónI was visiting Down House (home of Charles Darwin) yesterday and popped into this pub for lunch. It proved to be a very positive experience from start to finish! In the first place, I found Denise, who was serving at the bar, to be very pleasant, helpful and accommodating. We ordered our food and I was surprised at how quickly it arrived, yet still was of an excellent standard and presentation. As we were deciding where to sit, my friend mentioned that he didn’t like the high seats too much. Denise heard what he said, and immediately directed us to a different location where there was traditional seating which suited us perfectly. I had a tuna and mayo sandwich which came with delicious salad and the best coleslaw I ever tasted. I love coleslaw at the best of times, but their home made coleslaw had such a lovely taste and creamy texture, I could easily have eaten a bowl of it myself! I was so impressed with this that I could not contain myself and approached Denise to ask how it was made! Because it was relatively quiet and she was not rushed, Denise went to the kitchen, asked the chef, and returned to convey his reply. Not only that, but the chef himself came out and chatted to me. I was particularly impressed by the fact that he thought it worth his while to come into the bar and help. They both were both pleasant and friendly and this all contributed to a really pleasant day out! I felt compelled to ask Denise for her name so I could give her the credit she deserves! I have taken the liberty of looking at other reviews and am pleased to read that dozens of people feel as I do. I know this may sound a bit paradoxical, but the few negative reviews that have been written also enhance my opinion of this venue. My area of study was psychology, and believe it or not, many criticisms are in fact, indirect compliments in that they are precipitated by jealousy. There are always going to be those who enjoy jeopardizing other people’s businesses for various puerile reasons. Naturally, if a business does not provide a good service, then of course, that, quite rightly, should be mentioned. Nevertheless, when dealing with the public, it takes all sorts, and for this reason, the negative comments, for me, are the exceptions that prove the rule so to speak. It is impossible to please everyone! If I looked at any business with nothing but five star reviews, I would wonder if many were fake, written by family/friends etc. I would implore anyone who is dissatisfied with a service to speak to the proprietors at the time, thus giving them the opportunity to rectify the matter before leaving a negative review. Then, if no effort is made to sort out the problem, by all means mention it in a review and give the public an honest and accurate account of the place. This advice applies to all establishments, for me, the perfunctory, negative reviews need to be present in order to authenticate the positive ones. I close by saying that I am proud to confirm what the MAJORITY of other customers have already said. I will certainly visit this pub again so you have been warned! Thank you.
No probs at all. Great menu and a good selection of beer. Try the pies.
The food was delicious, especially the pies. They had a great selection of beer and ale. Convenient street parking available outside and plenty of seating inside.
The food at this restaurant for my mom's 80th birthday was terrible. It was actually embarrassing, to be honest. It seemed like they just pulled leftovers from the fridge and served it to us. There were no sandwiches, only stale rolls. The potato salad was like slop and no one wanted to eat it. This was probably the worst food spread I have ever seen in a pub. I would not recommend this place.
This charming pub has a rich history. Our group all enjoyed various pies, including chicken, beef and Stilton, and beef and ale. We each paid £22 for a pie and a ginger beer. The pastry was delicious and the filling had the perfect ratio of meat to gravy. Despite the empty pub and the quiet music playing in the background, the atmosphere was lacking due to it being a quiet lunchtime. The staff were friendly and the restaurant had child and baby friendly amenities.
