I had the ‘Smash’ smashed avo toastie. It was delicious and creamy. The iced long black was really nice too. And the staff were friendly and helpful.
I tried The Simple Plan toastie with the truffle oil and 3 different vegan cheeses. The three cheeses were all super yummy and the mozzarella melted so well. The Califia Oat milk they use is also really tasty and they don't charge extra for alternative milk!
We came here during the lockdown on recommendation of a friend, who in line with my view said they normally wouldn’t bother to buy toasties from a cafe. The staff kindly agreed to prepare our sandwiches on a board so we could put them in our own containers for takeaway. Vegan options were around half the menu. Staff told us one each was enough, but with past experience of being left hungry after a single sandwich, we ordered three between two of us. The chicken toastie was good and very substantial, the hash brown one nice and a bit lighter, and the smashed avocado one delicious and decadent with all its fillings. I needn’t have worried about it not being enough. I came back the next day and got just one jackfruit toastie, a bit spicy with its sriracha. Decent sandwiches, reasonably priced.
Since this place opened more than two years ago, I made my way through her plant-based menu. I ended this weekend and it was a while between the toasties. They had a new variety of vegan sandwich with mushrooms and herbs, so we tried this together with what was their most important offer for some time, the spicy chicken bird is not the word. Both have their merits: the mushroom was tender and garlicky, while the non-bird was decadent with its avocado and Mayo, although the mock chicken is not an impressive simulacrum. Your first choice for toasties is always the completely vegan place in the city, but if you are caught short in Fitzroy, this place will give you a more gourmet job, while sadly also animal battles as a menu option.
