Top Lage, mitten in Kandersteg.
Mixed but generally good. We stayed at Belle Époque Hotel Victoria for a week and ate in their restaurant every evening. We had one or two disappointments, but on the whole, we were very happy with the food and there were always choices for vegetarians and fish eaters. We were offered four courses each night but couldn’t always manage them all. There was generally a small starter, followed by soup, followed by a meat, fish or vegetarian main course, followed by dessert or cheese. Their salads were particularly good. We were allocated the same table for breakfast and evening each evening and the staff were friendly and attentive but non-intrusive.
It was pretty much hit or miss here in the Victoria Dining Hall. There was nothing that really wowed us about our nightly meal experience here. Sometimes the food looked good, but lacked taste. Generally, on the bland side, though the kitchen did try with the presentation. Service took way too long for a fixed menu. It shouldn’t take 2½ hours to serve 3 simple courses. It would have been far better for them to offer a buffet dinner for our group of 40. Breakfast was a basic continental offering– some dry meats and cheeses, croissants and bread plus cereal and jams. And also as is customary in Switzerland, they provide raw eggs that you boil yourself. I was not impressed with this restaurant. After one unobliging incident, it left a sour taste in our mouths. A server wouldn't set an additional table to accommodate a family of five in our group to sit together even though there were several empty tables available. The server just stood there pointing out one empty seat on each table and saying they could fit themselves in those spaces! I mean, what family would want to sit spread out at 4 or 5 different tables sandwiched between strangers? Did she put herself in their shoes and really think about the request? No. What would it have cost her to set another available table? All she needed was a tablecloth and 5 cutlery sets! Just seemed to me laziness on the part of the staff member, who was quite rude to refuse and to make a scene in front of dozens of attentive, appalled ears! I have never seen this before where staff seem unwilling to go above and beyond in their job! But it's only with certain staff here, as the hotel’s front desk staff were brilliant! With so many other dining choices in Kandersteg, this restaurant needs to up its game, as there will be patrons who would prefer to eat elsewhere if they aren’t on a set group meal plan.
Super urchiges Hotel mit sehr freundlichem Serviceperspnal.
