I really appreciate the diverse menu, which features a great selection of drinks inspired by Japanese flavors. We tried the shoya, and it was delightful. The ambience and service here are exceptional, making for a wonderful overall experience.
This is a fantastic spot for a Japanese bar experience. I tried the set dinner, which was a bit on the expensive side. The bar is tucked away, just as the name implies. I really enjoyed their sake-based cocktail.
I ordered the Hihou set, which consists of five courses for $60.00, including: - A 'Cuban' spicy tuna cigar - Sweet corn and scallop kaki age, served with nori and shichimi - Coffee-cured salmon sashimi with cucumber, wakame, and kimizu - Hihou fried chicken - Kushiyaki kurobuta pork belly skewers with teriyaki, fried potatoes, and nori salt My review: I adore degustation menus as they push me to broaden my culinary horizons. They introduce me to new flavors and combinations that I might not have chosen on my own, and everything is expertly arranged for me. Our favorite dish was undoubtedly the pork belly skewers. They featured a perfect layer of fat that provided an incredible burst of flavor with each bite—absolutely delightful! Every other dish was equally memorable and inventive; who would have thought to pair corn and scallop? The service was exceptionally accommodating. My friend and I were in a hurry due to a prior engagement, and we requested our dishes to be served as quickly as possible. Even on our small table, the staff made sure the food kept coming one after another. Impressive! A quick reminder: be sure to make a reservation through the Hihou website!
Secret bars are my favourite place to hang out in Melbourne. This place is fab as you ring the secret door bell and walk into a very posh bar.<br/ <br/ We enjoyed a round of lemon gin cocktail (but I can't remember the name as I can't find an updated menu) after dinner.<br/ <br/ Lovely ambience and very relaxing atmosphere.
I stopped in here after dinner. Actually it took some searching out. It is quite hidden. There is no sign. There is just a door on the south side of the street on Flinders Lane with a call button. If you round the corner on to Spring Street, you'll see a bottle shop. Hihou is right above the bottle shop (I can't remember the name).<br/ <br/ Once you get in, the atmosphere is fantastic. Very subdued and calming. The windows also give you a great view over the Treasury Gardens.<br/ <br/ The food is supposed to be very good but I only had a cocktail. I had the EDO Murasaki (Japanese whiskey, Campari, Averna, yuzu, lychee syrup and shiso). It was a fantastic cocktail. Spirit forward (which I wanted) and quite balanced. It was also served over a beautiful hand carved ice cube. <br/ <br/ I look forward to going back!
