This place is simply magical! My husband and I first stayed here on our mini-moon on our way south to Asheville and enjoyed it so much that, upon checkout, we booked another night for our return trip! We have since returned for two weekend-long stays, and booking a future stay has now become kind of a tradition (upon checking out last summer we booked a stay for our first anniversary in October, and upon checkout then we booked for our upcoming second anniversary! The inn has a charm reminiscent of European inns and the bygone days of travel, lovingly updated to welcome today’s modern travelers, with several places to kickback and relax, including the wonderful, large front porch, beautiful rear patio and gardens, and the lovely Thistle Lounge, which also features an incredible cocktail bar! The restaurant is delicious, the staff friendly and attentive, and the rooms, many of which have been recently renovated, are comfortable and well-appointed with wonderful details and character (we enjoy staying in a new room each visit and our favorites so far have been the John Winthrow and Pearl S. Buck rooms . The location is perfect, making it easy to walk to the great restaurants and shops nearby. If you are looking for a wonderful getaway in a unexpectedly quaint cool town, look no further! Rooms: Well appointed with wonderful design details and character. Walkability: The location is perfect, making it easy to walk to the great restaurants and shops nearby. Additionally, the waitstaff was not responsive when we asked to return undercooked steaks to the kitchen. When I mentioned that my steak wasn't cooked properly, they seemed put out and asked if I wanted them to send it back for a second attempt. The filet I received had gristle running through it and resembled a ribeye more than a proper filet. The quality of the steaks has declined since our last visit six months ago when the filet was genuinely a filet. Moreover, if you have any dietary restrictions, don’t expect any accommodations. They served a standard potato and mixed vegetables, and they couldn't cater to basic needs like avoiding onion or garlic. If you’re looking for anything beyond cookie-cutter service, this is not the place for you. We will not return and will share our experiences with everyone we know. On the other hand, I would recommend the Livery, where they are attentive to my dietary needs and ensure my filet is cooked correctly without making me feel like a bother. There’s also no kids' menu, so unless your child wants a burger, the options are limited. I anticipate a sarcastic response from the owner, which seems to reflect how the staff is directed. The replies to past reviews have been inappropriate, and I don't expect a constructive response to this one either, just more falsehoods. It's notable that you've suggested others have been dishonest in their reviews too. I have nothing to lose by sharing my experience, readers can decide for themselves whom to believe. Service rating: 2.
