Humble decor, and unenthusiastic waiter. We ordered a chicken Korma, chicken Tandoori, a Dahl soup, and a nan bread. The soup was tasteless, clearly very little lentil was used to make it. Not spiced properly too.The chicken Korma was way too sweet! Not fun to eat.The Tandoori was probably the only acceptable dish, although no spices were used and the red colour was all artific colorings and not spicy sauce mix.The nan bread was too thick, it looked more like a pita bread than a nan! And he charged is 2.5$ for it plus tax.Overall, I think this was one of the most disappointing Indian meals I have had in a while.NOT recommended, look elsewhere.
My best friend and I chose Ambala as the restaurant for our best friend Christmas dinner and we were very happy with our choice! The restaurant is small and cozy and we loved that it is a bring-your-own-wine. The prices are excellent and the portions are a good size. The food was very, very good! I ordered Dahl soup with butter chicken, basmati rice and Naan bread while my friend ordered the same except chicken korma. We both really enjoyed the food and ate until we couldn't eat anymore! The only thing that did not make this a perfect review was we both found our chicken meals to be a little sweeter than it should have been. Also, we waited a while to be served and in between courses. However, it was obvious that the food was made fresh and to order so we didn't mind the wait. We will definitely be going back to Ambala!
The negative reviews for this restaurant are very surprising to me. This has been my go-to restaurant for Indian take-away for about 5 years. Value for money - this place rates highest in downtown Montreal IMO. Often, I find Indian way too overpriced. This place has great specials - it competes very well with chinese take-away for price. The food is solid. Now & then I may find a dish not as good as usual - but it's always good the next time I order. Perhaps other reviewers have had a very isolated bad experience? Often I marvel how good a meal we ate for so cheap. If you want spicy ... they make some dishes that will blow your head off. I usually don't ask for those on account of my young daughter's tastes.I have never actually eaten at this restaurant ... only for take-away.My advice - give this place try. Personally, I think - value for money - it's a hidden gem.
Totally decent indian food, I suggest the butter chicken with rice, salad and veggie, tarkadahl soup with a spice tea! In summer window opens on the street and you can see the St-Denis crowd of people, artists, university students, an animated area too!
Naan bread is really bad, the soups were really bad, some of the chicken was alright. the lamb vindaloo was so horrendous that myself and my 3 buddies barely touched it, not to mention the spice was extremely overpowering. Wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy. BAD BAD BAD.
