If you've ever been here you know its a home like atmosphere. With that it means you can't expect a large party to fit in the restaurant, especially after they close (which is at 9pm). The food is amazing and you will be super disappointed if you don't check this awesome restaurant out!
Yelp helped us to find this off-the-beaten path restaurant, and we were very glad to get out of the PCB crowds. I was glad I read about Sue's connection to J. Michael's--it's always on our favorites list. Also the menu would have been confusing since many of the titles are the same. Everything from the spaghetti to the sautéed shrimp to the mashed potatoes were very well prepared and quite good. My husband said the cabbage was excellent and I really liked the slaw (not quite as spicy as J. Michael's which I love! . We honestly bought an extra 2 orders of the corn fritters to take home with us. They are worth the drive back over the bridge for sure! Why 3 stars? One star simply because the food was not 5 star food. The food was really good, but the market price for grouper was higher than the prices on the beach, which would have been fine if the dish had been excellent, but it wasn't anything we would order again. Also, Sue's is missing any sort of pasta besides spaghetti. Mainly the atmosphere is reason it's not at least 4 stars...if this doesn't apply to you, then I'm sure you'll like it fine. We went in with a group of 10; we had 6 adults in our 30s and 4 kids (two 5 year olds, one is 2, and one infant in a carrier . When we walked in the entire place stopped to look at us; it was clear we were not their typical customers. It's not like we came in like a tornado-our kids are (generally well behaved, but they literally sort of hid behind our legs because no one smiled at them or said hello. It felt like we could hear a pin drop; it was rude and actually a little creepy. The place was not full but they didn't have three tables to seat us together. We asked if we could just use two tables and sit 4 on each side and 1 on each end, which is simple enough to squeeze in with 3 small kids and a high chair. They said that would be fine, but it was clear they were not pleased; they kept saying it was imperative not to block the walkway to the restroom. I assured them that we would be just fine because my husband would not be standing in the path once we were allowed to sit down. Everyone eating and everyone behind the counter just stared intensely as we tried to get seated. Our waitress was kind and memorized our order perfectly (Amy, I think , but no one came over to help or to say that if we would wait 10-15 minutes, several tables were finishing and then they would have had plenty of room for us. Four tables were empty in 5-10 minutes--maybe we ran them out? One really nice guy who worked there helped my nephew pick up a little tin of (already broken crayons that he accidentally dropped, so that was really kind. However, we felt VERY out of place, and that's why we will not be making the trip to Sue's on 390 again. We are simply more of a J. Michael's kind of group--regular vacationers with young families looking for a good seafood restaurant. Their southern hospitality the other reviewers mentioned must be very selective. Hippies must use the back door at Sue's.
Everything was so good! Well priced baskets with two sides and fritters. Left way too full and very satisfied. :
We love not only Sue 's the restaurant but Sue as well. She is passionate about her food and it shows. Always fresh, homemade and delicious. It 's all good but my favorites are the open faced roast beef and the old classic Shrimp J Michael Old Style .
We loved it!! Great food and service! I had red beans and rice, so good! Off the beaten path and worth the drive!
