One of the best pubs in Hampshire both for food and drinks topped with brilliant service and also dog friendly
7 of us had a wonderful lunch on a Saturday. All the food surpassed expectation and the staff were brilliant hosts.
Every time I see this pub, it evokes images of an old Western saloon with its rustic wooden charm. I do wish it had swinging doors that would swing open as people come in, but I digress. Just as you might imagine a traditional saloon, this pub feels warm and lively. Inside, it’s bright and airy, perfectly complementing the sunshine outside. There’s a garden in the back, but we opted for the charming veranda out front—I'll stop with the Western references now! We settled onto our wooden benches and enjoyed some cold drinks while perusing the menu. The specials board featured an impressive selection, including venison, rabbit, and wild game. The main menu also had plenty of options if game isn’t your preference. It’s one of those menus that has a little something for everyone. It’s worth mentioning that the prices are on the higher side for pub food, but with the rising quality of gastropubs, sometimes it’s justified. We’re always prepared to point out if the higher price doesn’t deliver. I was drawn to the roast chicken served with a tasty sauce, new potatoes, and vegetables, while my dad went for a classic dish. I can confidently say that the extra cost is justified. All the ingredients are of exceptionally high quality, everything is homemade, and the execution is flawless. It’s also worth noting that the portion sizes are generous. For some inexplicable reason, many restaurants assume that larger portions mean less quality, but we believe that if you’re getting a small, high-quality dish, it should cost just as much as a larger plate of fish and chips. In summary, we left feeling happy and satisfied. I think it’s clear how much we love this pub. Its charm is everything we want in a country pub, topped off with wonderful food. It may be a bit off the beaten path unless you live in Hawkley, but once you visit, you’ll be a fan for life!
