We were priviliged to spent 2 days there bathed in sunshine which made the whole experience truly great. It is a great point to tour from and we made the most of it. The food was wonderful as well and the accomodation very comfortable and sizeable. Good or bad weather you can have a wonderful break in this hotel as there are several comfortable rooms to relax in. Nice hotel but not as plush as we had expected from their website or indeed as two other beautiful properties we have just had the pleasure to stay at; The Quay House, Clifden at €190 a night and the other at Coopershill House, Sligo at €299 a night. We were expecting Rathmullan House at €330 a night to be even better or on a par at the very least. It was not! Our bathroom towels were extraordinarily thin see photo and some were fraying they were so used, robes beige and flat, looked old. I really dislike step in the bath showers which is what we got as an executive room. All in all disappointing for the price paid. The executive room was clean and comfortable, having a pleasant outlook over the gardens. The bathroom could have been cleaned better around the plug areas see picture with what appears to be black mould. Bathroom rather dark and probably difficult to clean, it could be better lit. Bed was comfortable and pillows just about ok but not great. Suggest investing in new pillows or certainly change them annually. I had mentioned the towels and sink to the reception and the following day we had newer towels and the sink was marginally better. Small wall TV in lounge area with a small 2 seater sofa, but not in the bedroom area. Could not see a safe. No fridge in the room. Old fashioned decor that could have been done so much better at little if any more cost. Dressing table close to plugs but lighting terrible as not by a window and lighting poor. Suggest a table lamp is added. Some common areas of the hotel looking tired and in need of upgrading. Some of the sofas tired and uncomfortable. The tent style fabric in the dinning areas looks ok by night as they are studded with fairy lights but at breakfast they looked terrible with many burnt edges around small holes no doubt they’re for the lights. Dinner disappointing as had expected a higher level of cuisine. Whilst the food was good it was not the fine dining we had thought it should be, as depicted and described in their website. We wanted to order lobster at €10 extra but they had run out by 8pm. We tried the garden salad with pressed watermelon and an avocado dressing as a starter fresh but poorly presented and nothing that I could not have done a lot better at home. See photos The steaks were good as were the fries. I had the Brill good but nothing special supplement €5 as was the steak and cheese €4 supplement . 3 courses €60 and 2 courses €50. Second night we tried the pizzas which were good although two were burnt and were around €16 with a green leaf salad. We had booked dinner each night which was set at €110 for the two of us then told it gave us a €60 credit per head on the menu that had many dishes with additional supplements but thankfully we were able to cancel the second night without penalty. Breakfast was good but again not a patch on the previous three hotels that we had stayed at. Presentation was the issue rather than the quality in this case. See photo Quality and value for money is sadly lacking here. If it were under €200 a night it would be more appropriate for what is offered but still not a patch on what we experienced at The Quay House at €190 a night or indeed the other hotels we have enjoyed this trip. I suspect this hotel lives off an old reputation and it’s beautiful location plus its proximity to many of its Northern Ireland guests. Surprisingly most reviews seem good with some references to disappointing food yet speaking to a couple of locals they had said the standard of food in their so called fine dinning is not what it was. Currently it cannot be considered a four star hotel at best a good 3 star. A family orientated hotel as there were plenty of young children about during our stay.
