Zafar makes the most delicious pakoras.. thin delicate slices of brinjal (eggplant) with just the right amount of besen (chick pea) batter and spice in the mix. With floating aromas of ajwain (carom) and zeera (cumin). So so good and comforting. Recently, we also had our staff dinner at Masala Dosa. Of the 3 or so Indian/Pakistani restaurants in the Inner Sunset, I thought this was the most representative for my group of young interns who were trying Indian food for the first time. I also love their lamb seekh kebabs. They are luscious, juicy and delicious. My friend who is a vegetarian introduced me to their dosas, which are delicious. This is the only Indian restaurant in town that serves both north and south Indian food. I have been going to Masala Dosa for a long time. I have memories of sitting there with my mother and daughter under their cool deewan style canopy in the window table. I have been there to celebrate many many times with friends. The ambiance is lovely. The staff is welcoming. I am glad to finally be writing this long overdue review. 5plus stars! Please go check it out for yourself!
I have been going to this place for years and it is one of my favorites. The ambiance is elegant and intimate. The food is exquisite. We ordered the goat cheese naan, fish masala, mushroom masala dosa, and the onion salad. This was a great order for us this round, as it was a nice variety of flavors and textures. You could eat every dish together and it was fantastic. We added the onion salad to each dish, and it added another layer of complexity of flavor. I highly recommend trying this. The mushroom masala dosa is a more dry dish that you add the accompanying dips with, and we added the sauce from our fish as well. The combination was excellent. The fish masala was to die for, and was my favorite. It was cooked perfectly and the sauce was absolutely amazing--highly recommend this dish. It paired very nicely with the goat cheese naan (def get this naan if you are a goat cheese fan). Overall it was a great dinner, and the variety of dishes we ordered flexed our palette. Can't wait to go back once more.
Everything was great and portions were huge. The service was fast and the atmosphere was super cute in the window seats. I highly recommend the onion salad, you can put it in anything. The goat cheese nan is some of the best I have had and I've never had better fish masala. The dosa was great too especially with the onion salad on top.
The food at this restaurant is delicious and prepared quickly. The service is great and the ambiance is nice. I recommend trying the paper masala dosa, the banghan barta (which is mild and I enjoy), and the fantastic rice pudding dessert. YUM.
Do not be fooled by the 3 1/2 star Yelp rating. It's highly misleading and if you read the reviews to this place, a lot of people rave about this restaurant. I Highly highly recommend this Masala Dosa for Indian food. Their curries are great (can't go wrong with the saag paneer and dal) and their southern Indian dishes like idly and dosa are sooooo good. The service was also excellent. Can't recommend this place enough. If you've never had dosas, try it!
