The Modern is a hip sexy boutique hotel in an up-and-coming part of Sarasota that is close to everything but also feels like its own special oasis. You can use the hotel as a launching off point for all that Sarasota has to offer or better yet never leave the grounds to have an amazing relaxing get away. The hotel exudes a cool vibe – think Miami without the over-the-top pretentiousness. Its apparent as soon as you walk through the doors to the funky stylish decorating that you are not in another cookie cutter bland hotel chain. This place is cool and beautiful but what makes this hotel so special and unique is the amazing service. Lost quality service seems to be a lasting outcome of the pandemic. The Modern Hotel is the remedy for that.Top notch service all began as we entered the front door and met Kendra and Britney at the front desk. I could write an entire review just about these two and how the kindness and attentiveness of hotel staff can completely turbo charge your positive feelings about your stay.As a last-minute decision my wife and I decided to have a quick staycation to get away from the kids. Checking in on the Bonvoy app I noted that it was our anniversary. Arriving at the hotel I was greeted with warm and friendly smiles from Kendra and Britney. I mentioned again that it was my anniversary trip and they said yes, we see that on the reservation and you have been upgraded and you will love this special room. They were almost as happy about upgrading us as we were getting a better room. And oh what a better room it was. The hotel has several top floor balcony suites with bathtubs right on the balcony. This has to be one of my favorite Marriot brand rooms I have ever stayed in. My new friends Kendra and Britney didn’t stop there, they provided us with complimentary drinks and even brought a fruit platter to our room. I travel a bit for work, have Gold status, and like anyone enjoy a nice word about the hotel appreciating you, but I have never felt so well taken care of.Kendra and Britney were great, but our interactions with all the staff showed this was not a fluke or an isolated thing. Raphel a manger at the hotel is doing something very right, it is clear the hotel cares about its customers and that providing exceptional service is in the DNA of the hotel’s staff. As mentioned, our room was amazing, but so was the funky restaurant/bar, and pool with cold plunge and hot tub. We were impressed with every aspect of the hotel. What I also found impressive was that every other guest we talked to had a similar story about amazing service and having an exceptional stay. It’s not often that your accommodations can be the star of your vacation, but the Modern was a star and more as it transformed a quick last minute anniversary trip into one of the most memorable anniversaries we’ve had. Now, whenever friends, family or colleagues come to Sarasota to visit without question I know where we will send them to stay.

2.5 out of 5 stars, especially for a 4 star hotel. I called ahead of time to tell them it was my birthday weekend and our anniversary weekend (and I am Marriott Gold/almost Platinum member), and the manager said, no worries we 'll make sure we take great care of you. I am fiercely loyal to Marriott when I work travel. Well, I arrived at 1pm with my dog and said, can I check in early (it was a Friday in the summer in Sarasota, the dead season for South FL). The woman said, your room isn 't ready, but we can call you when it is. I said, any ideas when? No idea. Right. The one rare time I try to check in early somewhere...They do allow dogs for a $100+ tax fee per stay, so we did bring our rescue, which is why I wanted to check in early. Anyway, we went to a local dog friendly establishment to try to sit in the shade as it was 95 degrees. We didn 't end up getting a call until 4pm to say the room was ready. That 's normal check in time, I should hope so. I said to the staff when we arrives, I 'm a little bummed about this 4pm check in. My fiance didn 't want to make a big deal of it, so I simply said I was a bit disappointed, and as a 'we 're sorry ', they did give us a cheap bottle of sparkling bubbles and told us they 'upgraded us '. They did not. I booked a room with a balcony, and that 's what we got (don 't lie to me).Alaos, I used my Marriott points and paid $30, but on top of $30/valet night, random additional resort fees, (and the dog), I ended up paying $150/night. The room isn 't very large at all. The balcony is decent. The pool water was 100 degrees.I also mentioned to multiple people at the property that my two night stay was both under my name and my fiance 's (two different last names). Well, of course, when we arrived back on Saturday after 11am and a quick stroll in the am, they cancelled my room key and I spent an hour trying to explain to them that I already spoke to multiple people about keeping the same room.Lastly, when I asked for towels the next day, we also waited a good 45 min to get them.Overall, understaffed and staff did not communicate with one another. At least the valet guys were super nice, as was the outdoor bar staff by the pool.
Really great place. Be aware that they require you to do valet parking even though the parking lot is literally right behind the building. Maybe just employ someone to watch the lot and let us park our own cars?Everything else was amazing. All the staff were friendly and helpful, the room was very nice. Pool is small, but our 13 year old still enjoyed it. There's a full bar beside the pool and you can also order food. They have ping pong out there as well. The restaurant is very unique and the food was excellent. There is a workout center on the 5th floor that has a treadmill, 2 Peletons, and an elliptical, all in excellent condition. Good assortment of free weights, as well as yoga mats, medicine balls, and exercise balls. We will definitely be back!
The staff were all amazing! Super friendly and helpful. The rooms were decent, we had a balcony, but it was over the pool equipment. Also, the AC seemed to be struggling to work and none of us got a great nights sleep.Rooms: 4/5
