I really wanted to love this place because of how cute it is and how close it is to my workplace. I would've loved this place to be my go-to coffee joint, but I now drive to Kaladi's in town for my coffee meetings. I've been here at least 4 times and I'm just not impressed with the coffee or the food. The ambiance is lovely and the cafe itself is beautifully designed, so it's ideally great for meetings and the like (there's also a private room in the back for larger meeting spaces), but as far as the coffee goes, it's always burned and not well-made. I always get an iced decaf tan mocha and even the way the iced coffees are made show that the baristas don't know how to formulate iced drinks. The food is also subpar, unfortunately. I've ordered the cookies, the brownies, and the breakfast burrito, and I wouldn't buy any of them again. The cookies still taste like flour, the brownies are a bit bland, and the burritos aren't cooked well (not very plentiful either or moist on the inside). I'll come back every few months to see if they changed up their food and coffee game, but at the moment, I have to skip over Mel's as my coffee place.
Is this a meal for ants? Ordered the breakfast bowl for $9, but it was hardly any food. Food was a C+, bacon was a bit soggy. They need to give out better portions for the price.
I've been visiting Mel's almost everyday for a month during my visit in Alaska. Their customer service is always on point, they cook all their meals fresh everyday before the store opens, and their food is delicious! I must say their breakfast burritos are super tasty, they have a wide selection of pastries and the carrot cake is the best that i've had, and they almost always sell out every weekend so i definitely suggest arriving early in the day! If you want a nice spot to hang out their seating is super comfortable, and they don't play their music loud af like the Kelani brothers does (plus more food drink options). They also have a back quiet room with a couch which is comfy. If you like coffee shops and the vibe that comes with it, this is the best place to be. They also have a drive through.
Mel's did not disappoint! I love trying new places and this one is a standout on the Kenai Peninsula. The inside is decorated beautifully with plenty of seating and light. The food came fast despite ordering several different things per person. However, my only recommendation is for them to ask for a name when they are giving out orders since some of our things were the exact same as other people so when they called the food out more than one customer went to collect it. The food was delicious. We got a berry cobbler, chocolate cake, hot chocolate, yogurt parfait, and tomato soup. On the way out we saw their cinnamon rolls and they look delicious We will definitely be back!
