Empress Gardens - Southfield

I've been visiting this restaurant for years, but unfortunately, it has declined since the Covid pandemic. It just isn't the same anymore. I am really disappointed with the quality now.

The person who answered the phone was quite abrupt, and unfortunately, they hung up on me before I could even ask how long the wait would be. I tend to be forgiving and would have overlooked this if they had seemed busy, but when I arrived, the place was completely empty. After spending over $35, I was disappointed to find the food was terrible. The egg rolls, despite having bean sprouts, tasted like cabbage and lacked freshness. The fried rice was old, as if it had been sitting out for a day or two. I even tried reheating it, but that didn’t help. Although the almond chicken was plentiful, it was tough and thick, the gravy was watered down, and the broccoli was mushy. I’ve always loved Chinese food, but after hearing some negative rumors and now having this experience, I won’t be returning. Instead, I’ll just start cooking my favorite Chinese recipes at home.

My first visit to Empress Gardens will definitely be my last! I ordered four Egg Foo Young patties without gravy for takeout, and the woman who took my order was quite rude. After receiving my order, I walked to my car and decided to check my food. I was horrified to discover that the container was filled with grease, with the patties sitting in it! I took the order back inside and showed the woman, but her response was, "That's how it always comes!" I kindly requested a refund, and she tossed the money on the counter. It was such a terrible experience...

So delicious, prepared very well, and great value for the portion sizes. Restaurant was clean and the staff were fantastic. Wish we discovered this gem sooner!!!
