I want to give this place 5 stars, but I can't anymore. When this place first opened. The food and service were great. They had an awesome green tomatillo salsa that they no longer make for some reason. Food is still pretty good, but the service has been awful. The food has taken a long time when we've dined recently. There were like 2 other tables of 2 people. I don't know what has happened, but I would really like to see it improve. I like your food. Also back the green tomatillo/onion/cilantro/garlic salsa. And fries as a side is weird. It was okay since they were homemade in the past, but our most recent trip, they were obviously frozen fries.
We recently stopped in here for lunch on our way through town and it was terrible! First, it was around 1:00, so they had been open for 2 hours already, but it felt like we tried to get in before they were ready. The bathrooms were not yet set up (garbage on a chair, no toilet paper, paper towels, soap, etc. , yet had also not been flushed. The ambiance was terrible; it was cold (servers were wearing jackets! , there are at least a dozen large tvs, all on separate channels. I had to find my own silverware and high chair. There were crayons and coloring books available, but not offered, so I just grabbed them myself as well. There was 1 other table in the entire restaurant, but our server rarely came to our table, and when she did it was with the absolute minimum interaction. Each time I had to have my list of needs ready (water and a plate were some of these needs, pretty basic offerings at a restaurant, but after realizing this is how service would be, I only asked for things I couldn't grab myself from other tables or the visible serving station and rattle them off quickly before she walked away. I have been a server, I know that it's tough and it's easy when busy to let things slip away. I am kind and I tip well, even for poor service, when I know that is what is happening. That was absolutely not the case here, it was just very very poor service for no notable reason (maybe she was having a bad day? Maybe she didn't like us? that's always a question we have to assess as a Queer couple with kids . Oh, and final complaint, it was $9 for a piddly little basket of chips and salsa that was not refilled until the very end when I finally grabbed her to ask for more! I really dislike when things that are generally a standard complimentary item (chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant!! are a charge.
La Carreta is the best Mexican restaurant in Stillwater. I wish I had found this authentic mexican restaurant sooner. Have probably driven by for a couple of years and had no idea it was there. This is real authentic mexican food. Not what I typicall see in the area. Large selection of dishes and mexican beer.
