We had a Bento Box menu that was typical of most Japanese fast food restaurants and sushi, which also was quite standard and not over... the top. The building was interesting. This place seems to take out a thriving business. We just sat in the diners, while the door was to a fleeting business of people who come to eat their dinner at home.
For me late night, the food is after 9:00 in a week night. If any other place is a bar or a pub with tapas and appetizers, we felt happy to come across Asahi Sushi in the church directly south of Bloor. And the bonus was free street after 9:00. As from Vancouver, where Asian food of any kind is the best in quality and preparation, our expectation for a local Toronto dining for sushi was not too high. We were pleasantly surprised how good the food and the service was. And the portions were generous. It was right up there with the best BC can offer. We had a variety of choices including salmon sashimi, avocado roll, chicken yaki udon, and tuna pizza. The tuna pizza deserves special mention, not seen on a menu in BC. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was a clear 10, much better than I expected; probably because it didn't taste like a pizza. Definitely something you should try if you don't. We had spent all day walking around the city and were looking for a nice quiet place for a relaxed dinner. Asahi Sushi filled the bill. Try it.
Dragon roll selection: WOW! Use of materials in perfect proportions. Tempura mix was also very good, perfectly light and crispy.
We decided to grab a bite to eat here for lunch. The portions were large and the food was scrumptious. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the sushi. I particularly loved the tempura, which consisted of lightly battered vegetables and shrimp that were cooked perfectly. The portions were generous and the prices were reasonable. The staff was very friendly.
I ordered the chef's special Tuna Dragon Roll, Agedashi Tofu (enough for two people and very affordable), and Edamame. The Edamame was average, a bit mushy, but the Tofu and Dragon Roll were both incredible. I had to take most of the Dragon Roll with me, as I was full after my appetizer, and the waitress quickly arranged for it to be packed. Overall, it was a very pleasant dinner for the price.
