05.09.2024 - 05:33I had a delicious venison and wild boar pie, gravy and chips that was very filling. I would have been equally happy choosing any other of the dozen or so different pies available that night. Excellent value and the experience hadn't changed since I first visited in the 1980s when working round the corner at what was the Civic Centre and is now a community garden. As a previous reviewer said, it would have been five stars but you have to leave somewhere for the Michelin starred restaurants to go.

22.08.2024 - 18:09A lovely evening in a relaxed environment enjoying excellent food looked after by a fun, friendly and efficient waiter. It was the best burger since lockdown topped with perfectly cooked bacon covered in melted cheese. When ordering, we were joking with the waiter that every dish seemed to come covered in fresh chillis whereas another restaurant I knew used fresh rocket which wasn't always appreciated. Just as I started my burger, the waiter appeared with a complimentary bowl of tomato and rocket sald saying he thought I might like to try the rocket. Now that is five star service! What a delightful surprise and I confirmed it was excellent rocket with a strong peppery taste. Looking forward to returning and perhaps trying some of the South African dishes next time.

13.08.2024 - 07:59I had a delightful time returning for another butter chicken with chilli and garlic naan. Nothing is too much trouble for these lovely people from bringing you a menu as soon as you sit down, quickly serving the food, immediately clearing the plates to bringing replacement pints from the bar. Really looking forward to seeing you again in 2024 with a group booking next time.

13.08.2024 - 07:59A lovely Sunday lunch outdoors of butter chicken with a chilli garlic naan suggested by the waitress as the naans weren't listed on the menu. The chicken was very tender and the sauce was tangy, perfectly complemented by the light, bubbly naan which was cooked to perfection. The service was delightful and friendly throughout.

08.02.2024 - 14:59We had to walk through the lovely old pub full of atmosphere to the beautifully decorated dining room which could have been any stylish restaurant in the country apart from the terrible 1980s art on the walls and zero atmosphere. We were then given the bar menus to choose from which had no starters, so it was fish and chips or pies all round, good traditional pub food without feeling we were in an historic pub. Yet the branded pots on our plates containing small quantities of mushy peas and condiments made it very hard to add them to the meal. By contrast the dessert menu was extensive and the portions generous. The service was polite and efficient. Several of us felt we would rather have ordered what we saw at home on the restuarant menu that was explained away as a problem with not being able to take it down off the website.

02.02.2024 - 09:59I was keen to support a local business on a visit to Artists in Goring so chose the Village Cafe for lunch with friends. There was a steady stream of customers served by young friendly staff so I was happy with the quoted 30 minutes wait for my cheese and ham panini. It did mean that some of my group had finished their lunch before others had received their orders or other people 's orders or were informed that the cream tea they had ordered had been put through as a Coke. We never did find out who ended up with the scrambled eggs we were twice offered. My favourite moment was when the woman in the queue ahead of me asked for a strawberry milkshake, was told that isn 't something they offered, so she turned round and pointed to the specials board that had only one thing written on it in large letters 'Strawberry milkshake '. Tasty food, lovely people, relaxed atmosphere, nice setting, great fun

01.02.2024 - 18:49It is very easy to claim you have found a new favourite restaurant and then realise a couple of years later you haven't returned. Well I did return for lunch on Saturday and it was just as good as the first time. The mini bread rolls were delicious and although the starters weren't to my particular taste they were still perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. My beef fillet was cooked exactly how I requested and was incredibly tender. The apple and currants pastry was also very tasty and brilliantly matched with clotted cream. The service was delightful and I have already booked return visits.

31.10.2023 - 07:01The Thai food was excellent value, delicious and everybody cleared their plates. The staff and manager were lovely and friendly. If they could develop a system where the right food was delivered to the right person and them paying for it with the right bill in under three hours, this would be a five star review.

05.10.2023 - 04:50My theme for this review would be 'Duck 's off ' given our group of 12 pre-ordered but the duck salad had disappeared off the menu before our booking date arrived. I declined to order a replacement as I found the limited choice of four starters (normally my favourite part of eating out) was not to my taste. Maybe a starter with prawns in it would be a good addition or fried breaded brie to provide more alternatives? This choice was reduced further when on arrival we were informed that due to a supply not arriving that day 'Thai fish cake is off '. The owner was very good at suggesting gluten free alternatives. I did stifle a ;laugh when somebody ordered a Pimm 's and was told there was no Pimm 's. The owner and staff were very good at rearranging the furniture to make us comfortable on a very hot day and then moving us indoors. We had originally hoped to sit out on the balcony but soon discovered the flaw in this plan when the sun shone through a glass roof directly above us that didn 't have a blind on it. I didn 't mind waiting an additional 15 minutes for my cod, chips and peas to arrive after the curries and salads had been served as it reassured me that it was freshly cooked from scratch although I know it bothered other people who had already been given their food. As predicted, my large piece of cod was perfectly cooked and the chips had the right balance between being crisp yet fluffy inside. The individually requested condiments that were supplied in half full tiny metal bowls didn 't really seem to fit in with the overall ambience and only covered a third of my fish. The owner entered into some banter with the person paying ahead of me that his meal was a bargain and when he didn 't seem to agree it was pointed out by the owner he did indeed think it was very good value for everything he and wife had for food and drink. I agreed.
