I have often eaten at Applebee, but if that were my first, I would definitely go back based on this experience.

This was such a great experience! We were tourists and out of towners passing through Knoxville from Gatlinburg to Nashville and had to stop in to watch Ohio State play (and lose!!! to Oregon. Since there was a home Tennessee game, this HUGE sports bar was completely empty. First floor had 5 people, and upstairs had 4 people including us. Lesson learned, people in the south actual GO to the games while people in the west go to sports bars to watch their teams play... With that out of the way, we were upstairs and the bartender was one of the best, friendliest, and sweetest bartenders I've ever come across. She let us taste a variety of beers from their 40+ taps as we're from Oregon and love beer, especially IPA's. She was so engaging and helpful and really made our entire experience special. She even turned one of the TV's away from the Tennessee game so we could watch Ohio State and Oregon play. Besides this awesome waitress/bartender (who needs to move to Portland and show people in the hospitality industry what TRUE hospitality really is! the rest of Barleys was awesome too. Beautiful old brick building with original wood floors. Huge tap selection upstairs and downstairs. Big new flat-screen TV's to watch games on. Cool covered patio area outside. Pool and some video games upstairs. Pizza was really good and their appetizer of pita, sausage and pimento cheese was unique and really tasty as well. I cant express what a great time it was for us and how I can't wait to get back to Knoxville to watch college football here again!

We live close by and visit regularly and have found that the food preparation is not very consistent. Spin dip as an appetizer and some days it’s thick and other days it’s thin.. Some days it’s nice and hot, other times it’s barely warm… It’s never bad per se, just never the same dish twice. The pizza, on the other hand, does tend to be somewhat consistent. Most times the wait staff and bartenders are great. We did receive unfriendly service at the downstairs bar once recently but, it was just after a UT home game and the restaurant had been very busy, having to use plastic cups for beer, etc. so I’d probably be grumpy as well. Still, no excuse for wearing your emotions on your sleeve in front of guests. Overall, I recommend this place for a cold beer and some pizza. I also appreciate the vegetarian options for those who do not eat meat.
