Great little find! Would recommend highly!

The menu is small written on a black board in Portuguese which changes daily. Everything is cooked fresh for your order. We had something different to eat every visit. All washed down with a fantastic red wine. You know it must be good by the local business people officers from the port authority are lunching there. Service is excellent and watching the cook prepare meals in such a small space is a marvel. There are few tables outside on the street, tables inside are close together but we like to eat in with the locals.

On the first visit we had the hearty vegetable soup, a toasted sandwich, cheese omelette served with side salad and a small plate of delicious mixed potatoes. This time it was the vege soup, pan fried fresh Portuguese dorado fish with the mixed potatoes followed by two of the very delicious small local custard tarts (pastel de Nata and strong milk coffees. And while we waited, which was wasn't long, we were given some hot herb bread to munch on. For top home cooked food at very reasonable prices, then a meal at this small bar restaurant is a must. P.S. The restaurant name is not displayed but it's on the corner of Rua de São Francisco and Rua Carreira. P.P.S. Including 2 beers, our bill today came to 23 €! Wow!

Once we managed to catch their eye and ordered cake and coffee, they insisted...we sit down and they'd bring it out instead of just passing it over the counter. No prices displayed anywhere but that seems to be standard for the island. Not a speck of gluten free food so lucky the Coeliac patient in our party brought their own food with them. The place was incredibly cramped (weather being a bit too cold to sit outside).
