The freshly made dumplings are a standout and worth trying. The other dishes, while not all perfectly smooth, are interesting and tasty, particularly the ones with a chili base. Overall, this restaurant earns a strong recommendation.
Although the service employees are surly and plates may occasionally fall on the table, the good portion sizes and cost-effective pricing of the food make up for it. Overall, the food is worth trying.
I must admit, I am a fan of the SMH Guide and love exploring new places for good food. Although we initially planned to visit Rylstone for some amazing dumplings, we opted for an alternative closer to Sydney. We ended up in Ashfield, a bustling Asian hub that we hadn't visited in years. The aromas of Asian cuisine filled the air and we were excited to try a new recommendation. The restaurant was empty when we arrived at 12:15, which made us hesitant. The service was lackluster and the food was just okay - the dumplings were decent but nothing extraordinary, and the spring rolls were bland. We overheard another diner complaining about the timing of their meal. Overall, we were not impressed and won't be returning. It makes us question the credibility of the SMH Good Food Guide and if this place was truly deserving of being listed.
We stayed around Ashfield several times about 10 years ago and had a fine memory of nice Chinese food. We went there for a quick dinner last week but couldn't find any of the places we ate before and we picked this one as it...looked popular but had a table. Oh, what a mistake! The worst chow mein I ever had!! And it was SO noisy. Will never go back there again.
OK, so I live 6 hours south of Sydney where there is a dearth of quality Asian food so perhaps I am easily impressed... However for $46 I had a feed that would have easily done 3 4 for my mate McGill I maybe...we got lucky but the food was outstanding. Fresh, tasty, clearly made in house... Good dumplings a spectacular schezuan chicken dish. Very basic surroundings, friendly service, BYO everything alcohol wise just loved it. Wheelchair access to the restaurant was via one quite large step I didn't bother to check if they had an accessible toilet. Would be VERY happy to go back anytime.
