I tried pheasant with chestnut, a bit salty but still good. If you like cod, don’t miss the codfish salad starter. Be sure to call ahead for dinner.
Recommended by our host Luis from Solar de Santa Maria Just 5 minutes walk away. The dining room was impressive as was the menu. However 27 years in the country, and I forgot that many locals particularly in the north seem to prefer their food just warm rather than hot? The quality of the meats was excellent and so were the sauces, but overall marred by being served on cold plates. My remark to the waitress was immediately passed up and the owner António and his wife came separately to enquire. The excuse was that although they might heat the plates in winter, they didn't in summer. Since it was 12C and rainy it didn't feel summery! The service and desserts were very good but for us the meal was marred by the temperature at which the food was served.
Don't be put off by the splendor of the place. It looks massively expensive but it wasn't. The service is excellent, the surroundings are lovely and the food was very, very good. Javali was the best I've ever had. It was a bit like stepping back in time with the glamour but worth a try.
Voltei oito anos. A última vez foi 23 de dezembro de 2016. Foi bom ver que D. Ana e Mr. Desiderius continuam em boa saúde e bom espírito. Ofereceram-nos uma mesa em uma sala de estar com uma lareira, que agradecemos, porque fora eram 2°C. Para aqueles que não sabem espaço, faz-nos sentir que estamos de volta 100 anos no tempo, e temos um caleche à nossa espera lá fora. Os livros nas prateleiras nos mostram que estamos em uma casa de cultura, e a música de fundo confirma. Quanto à comida e ao vinho da casa permanecem irrepreensíveis. Comemos javali cozido. Desejo ao casal anfitrião continuar com paciência e vontade de manter este espaço cultural aberto por muitos anos. Comprimentos para o novo empregado que é uma simpatia.
