Walking around Debenhams today with an overwhelming sense of sadness washing over me. The once happy, smiling staff were putting on a brave face, although it was easy to see they felt at a loss as everything was stripped bare. The once gleaming make-up counters, were stripped and the wafts of perfume around them were non-existant. Memories of being dragged around the shop by my mum after school came flooding back, shopping here for baby clothes, holiday clothes and coming here for breakfast and seeing the happy Irish lady serving behind the counter, now seemed like a distant memory. To say the least saying goodbye to this shop is not just saying goodbye to bricks and mortar, it is marking the end of an era, a box of memories and the heart of our town centre. I’m sorry things had got in this desperate state, I’m so sorry for the staff and wish them all the very best.
Unfortunately, Debenhams will soon be closing down, following in the footsteps of other well-known department stores like C&A, BHS, Littlewoods, and others near the seafront. Debenhams has been a staple in Eastbourne for as long as I can remember. Upon entering the store, you are greeted by the various perfume scents on the first floor. The restaurant on the second floor serves delicious food. It is truly a shame to see it go.
We stopped in for a cup of tea while shopping and were served two small pots of tea and a pitcher of milk. We enjoyed it as we are tea lovers. The café is small and offers a pleasant break for a drink. You can also get something to eat if you wish.
After a long walk, we were in desperate need of a cup of tea. Unfortunately, the tea we received was overpriced and terribly stewed. The atmosphere of the restaurant was dreadful, with loud and unpleasant music playing. The staff seemed uninterested and bored.
I went to Debenhams restaurant on Saturday. My husband ordered a pie for £5.95, but vegetables were an additional cost. After looking at the menu, I wanted to try the Mac and Cheese, but at £7.25, it was too expensive. My husband didn't enjoy the pie and the coffee was weak. My pot of tea was also cold. Despite enjoying shopping at Debenhams, I won't be returning to their restaurant. I will walk further to find a more welcoming place to eat.
