The staff were very welcoming and the menu varied and exciting. I settled for a Steak and Ale Suet Pudding... before it even arrived I knew I'd be in for a treat, everyone around us were eagerly tucking into there dishes. When our meals arrived we were not dissapointed, the puddings was cooked to perfection, the vegetables were obviously fresh. Pub food: but done excellently, fairly priced, warm welcoming staff and environment. A Must!
After a couple of days on campus at Lancaster University, I needed to get away from pubs teeming with drunken idiots. The Plough provided an excellent alternative. It took about a half hour to walk down there, but it was well worth it. The couple of pints I had before dinner were a bit over priced, but this may further deter professional drunkards from wandering down from the university and being their loud, useless selves, so I was okay with the price. I had the Cumberland sausage with mashed potatoes and vegetables, which was really larger than what one person ought to eat in one sitting. In short, you get a lot of food for your money. It's also quite a bit better than what you would expect to get at a pub. The atmosphere is quiet and clean, and there were quite a few local people enjoying drinks and meals. This is a really good place for a quiet evening dinner.
This is the third time I've reviewed this pub as we have been visiting it regularly for about eight years now. It hasn't changed much over the years, though the food has varied in standard during that period and has had its ups and downs. It's a friendly welcoming pub with a couple of real ales on and a good choice of lagers, ciders and bottled drinks. Inside it has retained a certain amount of character and outside there is a lovely beer garden, full of flowers, which is really popular on a summer's day. It has a mixed crowd of patrons; folks passing by on the busy A6, boaters from the nearby canal marina and visitor moorings, Galgate locals and also occasionally students from Lancaster University. I would say the food is priced about mid range for decent pub food in the area. The food has been of a pretty good standard for quite a while now and we look forward to dining there. The portions are extremely generous, possibly too generous at times as you can feel a bit over faced but hey ho you can always leave some can't you? : Check out the photo of the fish and chips that I posted and you'll get an idea of what I mean about the portions. Smashing pub all in all, we need more like it! :
Olde English pub with good beer, good food but few veggie options. Friendly staff. Sky Sports News.
Used this pub a lot but suddenly the food standard dropped, the last time me and my wife was there we had to sit in a cold draught the food was not upto scatch,my wife had scampi and chips with salad the chips were little hard crispy bits, never been since
