Tasty but oily dishes. I found their dishes too oily but rich in taste. Every table ordered the pork stomach soup is very rich in taste, the Stir-Fried Tiger Prawns With Minced Pork And Eggplant, and the Black Vinegar ribs. We ordered the black vinegar ribs but they ended up giving us a sweet sour pork. The batter was too thick. The prawns are gigantic and there were only 6 of them. Someone mentioned that it is 30% higher in price but it is also comes in bigger servings. So it's better to come in larger groups. This place is loud and many of the tables served wines. We found there were more younger generations than I expect in other Chinese restaurants.
Nostalgia Can Be Costly. I grew up in Richmond, and started eating Chinese food back in the early '70 's when there were a limited number of Chinese restaurants around. The Bamboo Grove was one, the King Wah, (owned by the same family), and the Brighouse Cafe.<br/ <br/ My friend expressed an interest in going to the Grove a few days back, and yesterday when we discovered that the Golden Spot on Bridgeport was closed (for good), we ended up at the Bamboo Grove.<br/ <br/ We parked out back behind the restaurant and entered through the back door. That should have been our first clue. The hallway was lined with very nice looking dark wooden panels and some lovely stone work. Getting to the dining room, we found 3 staff members getting ready for the dinner crowd in an otherwise empty restaurant full of large round tables covered in crisp white tablecloths and glass lazy susans.<br/ <br/ Within a minute of sitting down, we were brought menus and 2 white teapots. One with tea, the other with hot water. Nice touch.<br/ <br/ After opening the menus we discovered how they paid for the fancy wood and stone work. Prices were about 30 to 50% higher than we are used to seeing the more common Chinese restaurants that we frequent.<br/ <br/ Fried Rice started at $15.95 for a Yung Chow Fried Rice. Same price for Chow Mein with Chicken. My friend added a Sweet Sour Pork and we were off.<br/ <br/ Two problems at this point. Small 'dinner plates ' that are common in the high end Chinese establishments and no forks. While we can both handle chopsticks, rice has always been a pain and we both prefer forks for handling rice. On request, the waiter brought us a couple of forks, but we didn 't bother asking for larger plates.<br/ <br/ The Yung Chow Fried Rice was the first to show up. The plate was piled high with beautiful rice with shrimps and peas and egg. Some of the best fried rice I have had in a long time! If the shrimp had been any more tender you wouldn 't feel them in your mouth. Wonderful dish. <br/ <br/ Next up was the Chicken Chow Mein, done Hong Kong crispy style. Another excellent dish.<br/ <br/ Last up came the Sweet Sour Pork with Pineapple and Green Peppers. Photo perfect wish I had my camera to document it. The S S sauce was perfect, a nice balance and tasty and thick. The only problem was the size of the pork pieces. Just a little too large to comfortably eat. Very tasty, and even somewhat tender, they were more than a mouthful. They would have been perfect at half the size.<br/ <br/ All in all, it was a very tasty and filling meal. There was even a little left over for me to bring home. The quality of the food was great. But I am reminded that you can never go home.
Very delicious Chinese food!! Service is average but The good food makes up for it.
We have a wonderful meal and a lot of left over to take home. Bamboo Grove Chinese Restaurant, Richmond, BC 1/27/2011<br/ <br/ We heard this restaurant serve 'Pork Stomach and Gingko Long Boiled Soup ' 老火 豬 肚 湯, Pork Stomach and Gingko Long Boiled Soup ' 老火 豬 肚 湯, is my favor soup when I was a kid eating at home. This is very common family type of cheap soup served from time to time in an average family dinner. It 's tasty and cheap to make. It always with Gingko; dry soy bean curd; ginger (lot of ginger to take away the smell and taste of the pig stomach aroma) and if you want it tasty better and look more expensive, add some dry mushroom, boiled it 1-2 hours, you will have a wonderful dinner soup. There is no secrete and nothing to it, except for the labor to clean up the pig stomach before cooking it. I wonder why the CRA awarded them a GOLD WITH DISTINCTION AWARD for this dish. The CRA judgment is questionable. What DISTINCTION? This type of soup is being served in family in South China for hundred of years!!<br/ <br/ Since I haven 't had this soup for long time, (it appears that no restaurant in the Greater Vancouver area served this soup) I must order one to day. The waiter tells me we have to order ahead of time for this soup. Luckily the manager say they still have a small order and we can have. I was so happy to order it without ask the price and how small is the small size. And we also pick up a combo dinner for 2 for $29.95. The menu indicated we can choice 2 items from almost 30 items from the menu. We didn 't really look at menu, because we were so happy that they give us the last small bowl of Pork Stomach and Gingko Long Boiled Soup ' 老火 豬 肚 湯. We causally pick 2 items from the menu for the combo dinner. <br/ <br/ They serve the soup first, to my surprise, the small size of the Pork Stomach and Ginkgo Long Boiled Soup ' 老火 豬 肚 湯 is very big, bigger than the big served in other restaurant. It consists of a big plate of ingredients (pig stomach; ginkgo nuts; soybean curd; lean pork meat and ginger) a big bowl of soup. After we ate the ingredients and soup, we almost full and still have a lot of ingredients and soup left. When the 2 item combo dinner come up, we have no room to eat any more but I taste them and it all looks very good and taste very good. As mentioned earlier, I didn 't know the price of the soup and the size of the small size. It turn out the soup cost $30. In my opinion $30 for that soup is too expensive even it 's very big for small size. I would like they served half of the small size for half of price $15. Since I know now the size and price of that dish, I will not order that again. Because you don 't just have soup for dinner, you like other dishes too. Other than that, this is a very good restaurant, service is excellent.<br/ They have good food and good price. Highly recommended.
