The miso soup was excellent. The nigri selec was desh and a good selection. The tumachi roll was too spicy for us. We are having trouble finding any rolls without jalapeno. Not sure when that started being a stable ingredient in sushi?? I doubt its like that in Japan and it seems to be a pervasive trend these days.
Sashimi was fresh. Rice was a Riosoff for the small amount received.
It was my first time coming to Koi Japanese Bistro. I really enjoyed the miso soup and salad. It was very refreshing and opened up my pallet. I was surprised that I like the salad since it had beets on it. I really enjoyed it to the point and I wanted to order some more. I didn't care for the vegetable tempura and the roll I picked. That's why I gave the food a 3. The roll didn't have much flavor. and I didn't like the vegetables they chose for tempura.
We went here for happy hour (3:30pm-6:30pm) to check out the specials, came in on a Tuesday around 6pm, we were the first ones here. I really liked Pumbaa Roll, the sauces were good, probably the best thing I ate here. I didn’t care for the flavors in the Salmon Roll, tasted a bit bland to me. We tried the Glazed Japanese Sweet Potato, it had a nice buttery flavor, but also bland. We also tried the Ajitama Scoth Egg, this one was unique, I haven’t tried anywhere else, although a great idea with the layer of ground beef, the flavors weren’t quite hitting the pallet. The Petite Pepperfin had a sauce that was also extremely bland, but the deep fried jalapeños saved the day. We got sake bombs for $5 each! I’d say their happy hour is a great value, but they need to work on the combination of flavors a bit more.
