By chance an evening walk took us close to the Pizzeria di Piano in Berbenno and with a darkening sky the illuminated entrance stood out even more. This looked interesting and so it was. Firstly the food pizza Margherita for one and a pizza Napoli. Of course it was brilliant. Pizza oven flamboyance from the chef who had a steady stream of take away orders. The staff were equally fantastic and being the only Brits at the time we were the centre of attention and a great deal of fun. It was a family affair and really, really good with us each getting a free, departing, grappa! Hard to beat that. Well done.

A mini-bus takes you from San Martino to within a good walking distance of top of the valley and the foot of Disgrazia. This was our first visit to this breath-taking valley and being lunchtime we were certainly interested in taking a break. Rifugio Luna Nascente was a discovery and what a marvellous place – a refurbished stone property, extremely well executed, clean and comfortable. Sitting outside amidst hay-making and other rural pursuits we had an excellent lunch which very well served. It was a true delight and well worth the effort.
