03.02.2024 - 06:333.5 to be precise<br/ <br/ Lunch experience here that day was synonymous to taking a ride on The Giant Drop in Dreamworld, leaving me quite torn about the scoring for the first time.<br/ <br/ The Deep Fried Oysters and Original Korean Fried Chicken were fantastic! The fresh, creamy oysters and succulent, crispy chicken posed a promising start for more good food to come.<br/ <br/ Indeed, that promise was upheld with the Spicy Pork with Rice tender, smokey pork slices cooked in a sauce that had a good balance of both sweet and spicy elements.<br/ <br/ Sadly, that was where it peaked, stopped and plunged after I tasted my Spicy Seafood Ramen. The broth was awfully bland and lacking of chilli factor. A few mouthfuls of noodles, two calamari pieces, one clam and shrimps that were no bigger than a 5c coin later, I gave up. I was defeated by this lacklustre dish.<br/ <br/ At $10 each, the Lunch Specials are indeed enticingly cheap. The pork dish was worth every cent and more, but the ramen was a major letdown. I understand that seafood costs can be higher, hence the dismal amount given, but at least inject some love and flavour into the broth.<br/ <br/ It would’ve been a perfect experience if not for the ramen because the other 3 dishes that we had were fabulous and service was courteous.<br/ <br/ At least I now know better than to order the Spicy Seafood Ramen again next time.

02.02.2024 - 08:263.5<br/ <br/ What was once an unchartered territory for us is slowly becoming an occasional stopover for lunch. Third visit to Noble Park and still unfamiliar, we wandered around for a bit before deciding on Thu Do.<br/ <br/ The layout was simple yet comfortable enough and bright with cute little Vietnamese dolls adorning the hanging shelves above the counter.<br/ <br/ I had trouble deciding between the dry or soup version of the Rice Noodles With Prawn Pork so I asked the young girl for her recommendation and dry it was.<br/ <br/ From the generous garnishing of chives and fresh herbs to the slices of pork and sprinklings of sinful (but oh-so-good) fried pork lard, it had the taste to match. It was just the rubbery texture of the rice noodles that I found hard to get used to. Oddly enough, I still somewhat enjoyed my dish in its entirety although a tiny part of me wished I’d gotten the soupy one instead.<br/ <br/ My partner who felt more of a healthier option that day got the Bon Bon Combination Salad. True to the definition of what a good salad is, it boasted freshness and vibrance with a dressing that was balanced to a tee!<br/ <br/ Now, we do tend to be a little skeptical whenever it comes to quail as it can be unpleasantly dry and tough when poorly executed, but no, not here. Our Roast Quail was beautifully moist and delicious! Trailing not far behind was the Beef In Piper Lolot.<br/ <br/ Everything was nicely plated up with fresh ingredients and clean, clear-cut flavours that didn’t leave us with that heavy or bloated after-effect.

01.02.2024 - 17:073.5<br/ <br/ Looking up Zomato for new places around work to grab some early lunch (well, technically brunch since I skipped breakfast that morning), this one suited my purpose perfectly with an opening time of 11am.<br/ <br/ Taking over the spot once occupied by Mammy’s Boy, the venue has undergone a minor revamp and it is cheerful and bright.<br/ <br/ Unfamiliar with their menu, the friendly young man behind the counter navigated me through it and the majority of items are no more than $6.80 with the exception of the Build Your Own Bento Box at $14.80.<br/ <br/ The bento comes with default seaweed salad, spring rolls and endamame, plus an item each from the Gyoza and Don section where I picked the Pork Gyozas and Curry Chicken Katsu Don, adding on a side of Squid Salad.<br/ <br/ Reluctantly having to share my gyozas with my curious, beady-eyed, hovering colleagues, we ended up agreeing that they were pretty good! The Squid Salad on the other hand could’ve done away with less dressing as it overwhelmed the squid.<br/ <br/ The chicken in the Curry Katsu Don was cooked perfectly, but a little more of that curry sauce with a thicker consistency in there and they would’ve nailed it.<br/ <br/ Impressed with the gyozas, one of my colleagues requested to tag along next time and he ordered the prawn ones which were just as good. Our Chicken Karaage was crispy and succulent, but the Takoyaki can use a bit more work on the texture.<br/ <br/ Recognising me from my initial visit, the staff were lovely enough to throw in a free Squid Salad! Thanks guys! As an extra bonus, I got treated to an original flavoured Japanese cheesecake by my colleague. Happy days!<br/ <br/ To be frank, there are items that can do with a bit of tweaking, but they’re still trialling the menu and at such reasonable prices, there are certainly no major complaints.<br/ <br/ My sneaky colleague has since made a return without me! I know right, how dare he! Anyway come to think of it, it’s about time I made another visit too.

31.01.2024 - 19:373.5<br/ <br/ Who would’ve thought that within Colonial Fresh Market (selling green groceries and dry goods) lies Colonial Coffee serving up a galore of Malaysian goodies!<br/ <br/ There’s an entire fridge section dedicated to Malaysian staples of all sorts from Nasi Lemak to Curry Laksa all priced below $9.<br/ <br/ The concept is simple: pick out the items you fancy and if you wish to eat in, they will be warmed up for you on the spot; or if like us, you may also purchase them cold to take home for reheating later.<br/ <br/ I really don’t know what possessed us that day, but we picked out a whopping total of 9 items! Subconsciously prepping ourselves up for a zombie apocalypse perhaps? Lol!<br/ <br/ Ranging from average to good, the best of the lot would have to be the Turmeric Basmati Rice with Rendang Chicken and Lobak. The Nasi Goreng Kampung missed the mark and the Pandan Layered Cake was ordinary at best, but the Nasi Lemak Bungkus and Curry Laksa were quite authentic and the rest were decent.<br/ <br/ They have a dedicated kitchen located in Clayton where all the food is prepared and distributed to various locations apart from this venue, one being Colonial Fresh Market in Glen Waverley and the other at Papparoti in Springvale.<br/ <br/ Not necessarily the best Malaysian to be had, but the variety is good, prices are low and the convenience is there, with the added bonus of some very cheerful and helpful service.

31.01.2024 - 18:553.5<br/ <br/ This is my occasional stop over place for a quick dine in or takeaway lunch in between work. Not the most authentic Japanese cuisine, but it’s a pretty okay to go (pun intended) place that does the job of fuelling me for the day.<br/ <br/ Honestly, you’re not going find the heartiest ramen broth here and personally I don’t quite fancy bukchoy, carrots and beanshoots in them, but having ingested a couple of bowls of Gyoza Ramen here before, their gyozas are actually quite good.<br/ <br/ I once had the Wafu Steak and it was cooked perfectly medium rare as per request. The teriyaki sauce was sufficiently tasty, bearing a tinge of smokiness from the hot plate. A better coating of it amongst the beef and everything would’ve been more well rounded as there were pieces that were lacking.<br/ <br/ Whenever I’m not feeling too peckish, a tray of salmon sashimi always hits the spot and so far I haven’t had a bad one here. My pick of the crop would have to be their Oki Katsu Box as it has my favourite elements all in one pork katsu, tempura, salmon sashimi and miso soup.<br/ <br/ Recently had the Sake Don where the salmon was sadly overcooked and dry, but my side of Ika Fry was nice and crispy without being chewy. Albeit missing the spicy sauce noted in the menu, there’s nothing a little dollop of Kewpie mayo can’t fix.<br/ <br/ At the end of the day, I won’t necessarily call this little place the best out there, but its convenience and reliability has served me well.
