UKRAINE ???????? Eat the World NYC review: The block of Coney Island Avenue between Avenue P and Quentin Road has become sort of a Black Sea dining destination over the years, with the nations that surround this continent-straddling body of water almost all represented within a few meters of each other. ° Ukrainian cuisine might be seen through at least two different lenses if you look beyond the names of common dishes. The first would be if we had a Ukrainian grandmother andvisited her in Kiev during holidays, enjoying the feasts she prepared for the family using recipes passed down from her mother and grandmother. The second, and the lense in which Ukrainian food is seen here at Rondel, is that in which someof its dishes were co-opted by the Soviet Union after its creation and became part of the spectrum of Soviet foods enjoyed throughout the vast empire. Foods from Ukraine and the Caucasus, particularly Georgia, become well-known and belovedthroughout after the first world war. ° For this reason, you will notice some differences between the food here and the simple preparations at Streecha in the East Village. Waves of Ukrainian immigration has landed many tens of thousandsof people in the East Village since the end of the 1800's, whereas the Russian-dominated landscape of South Brooklyn and its foods is more Soviet-style.

This place is absolutely fantastic, we had a group of 25 for a birthday and baby shower celebration and everything was perfect. Delicious food, friendly, helpful staff, easy to communicate and organize ahead of time. Cannot recommend enough!
My family has been frequenting this establishment for years, and unfortunately, our most recent experiences have left us disappointed and determined to stop supporting this business. The restaurant space is tiny--so during weekends and Fridays, you will not get a table without reservation. Menu prices have compounded over the past months. Inflation--understandable. However, the portion size and quality of food has needlessly suffered. As if the owners stopped payingcooks or told them to cut expenses on absolutely everything, including food. Used to really like eating here, but the past four times we visited, our meals were very scant and overpriced. Banquets are a whole different story--a completerip off. The larger the group, the worse the rip off. We were celebrating a birthday (30 people) and half the guests were left hungry, because the food has been cut so drastically, that for insane prices of $150 per person, people could noteven get one serving of each dish. Banquets are a major rip off at every Russian speaking restaurant, so there is no surprise there. However, Rondel has set a new record for poor customer treatment. To add insult to injury, the staff stoleour leftover custom-made cake, which we purchased for the occasion. Only one tier of a huge, multiple layer cake was consumed by guests, so we were expecting to take the remaining cake home. Imagine our shock when we were told that therewas no more cake left! We were not drunk, to not notice how much cake was consumed! Extremely rude and unprofessional. Our guests already left the table half hungry, because the restaurant decided to save on food and still chargeastronomical banquet prices, AND the cake that we brought in was also taken! Unacceptable. Another great example: our party of 8 came for dinner on Saturday night, for a 6pm reservation. At 8pm, we were told that the cooks have left thekitchen and there is no more food! We were celebrating a birthday, so imagine how great that went! On
