Only vegetarian restaurant in Chiang Saen. Family run and very cozy. Speaks a few words English. Food was oke ;
This restaurant offers basic and simple Thai cuisine. The owner is very friendly, although they do not speak English. They are able to prepare a nice vegan lunch if you mention the word "every". The atmosphere is made even more welcoming by a family of well-maintained cats.
Located in a residential area beneath the old city wall, I was initially skeptical that this place would be open. However, Mae has been running this restaurant for 16 years and shows no sign of stopping. During my two-day stay in Chiang Saen, a city big enough to offer more dining options, I made sure to have both my lunches here. Even after nightfall, the restaurant remained open, with a simple menu written in Thai on a small whiteboard. The dishes, served with cabbage and mock meat, were delicious and affordable, never costing more than 40 baht. A side of spicy sauce was provided for dipping small cucumbers. Mae, the owner, is patient, motherly, and eager to converse with customers in Thai. On Saturdays, the restaurant becomes a social hub, providing a great opportunity for language practice, although social distancing can be challenging in the cozy space. Customers can even sit on the wall outside and watch local squirrels enjoy fruits provided by Mae. Even with other dining options available in the city, anyone looking for vegan cuisine in Chiang Saen should not miss out on trying Mae's delicious food and warm hospitality.
The owner ? spoke hardly English, but was very friendly and served us several dishes with rice. The food was cold as it seems to be common in jay eateries like this one and we could not choose from the menu or a buffet, which can be a serious problem if you need to avoid certain ingredients. However, everything we got served tasted good and it was a lovely experience to eat in such an authentic little restaurant.
