Le Chalet - Foulain

My fiance and I stayed one night at this hotel; not by choice, but because we had broken down on the French motorway and this was where the towage company took us. The driver suggested it because it was the ‘British hotel’. This was not true at all, the hotel just claims to offer a British tea salon. We were greeted by the female owner and her son, both barefoot, in a dark and dated bar area and then led through an equally dark restaurant. Upstairs we were shown to our room for the night which was cold, dirty and ill equipped. There was one chest of drawers which contained rubbish and was broken. The bed was made with stained bedding and had no pillows, just a long stained roll with no cover to it. In a side area there were shelves and hanging space which had a couple of dirty stained pillows with no covers and at least 10 cushions of various states. Under these we discovered empty wine bottles and beer cans. The ensuite shower room was just as bad. The smell was overpowering and made both of us feel quite sick. The shower cubicle was dirty with chipped tiles and a broken plastic shower stool. The complimentary toiletries were a used bar of soap and an opened half used bottle of something unknown. The bin was full of the previous occupant’s rubbish. The owner did not speak English so we used our minimal French to ask for some milk. Neither she nor her son seemed to understand even when we spelt it out on our phone in French. Eventually we managed to get our request understood. Later Tony went downstairs to ask for a bottle of white wine. Again it took ages for the owner to understand the request, even in French. When Tony went down to ask for the wine, he discovered the whole building locked up, even internal doors not very reassuring especially when there was also no sign of smoke detectors. We stuck with it for the night, mostly because to try and change rooms could’ve caused more problems than it was worth. We both slept in our clothes on top of the covers and were not very relaxed at all. This truly was the worst place we have ever stayed.

Beer only in bottles, I wanted a broth.

Frankly, it's not nice to criticize, at least it's typical with a couple who commits to making local trade live, what to encourage, a good price, very kind people to your service. The parrots were gonna get you a carrot somewhere else if you're not happy
