My husband and I went to Irie Diner for lunch. I had the Curry, he had the Jerk Chicken. Both were amazing. The chicken was so tender and delicious. The service was excellent. The waiter was entertaining and delightful. My only disappointment is that we waited so long to try it out!
I enjoyed my experience with my family here last night. The atmosphere was nice and welcoming despite lack of guests inside due to COVID. However, we witnessed a plethora of take out orders while we were there. The staff and owner were nothing but friendly and informative when it came to attending the table, answering questions about the menu, or even just indulging in some light conversation. The rest of my family had the ox tail while I partook of the curry goat. I tried a bite of theirs and it was tender, juicy, and flavorful. As for mine I have to say that it was the best curry I've ever had and honestly words fail to do it justice. It's one of those things that just can't be told to you. You need to experience it for yourself to truly appreciate. I highly recommend to anyone who hasn't tries Irie Diner to do so. You won't regret it.
Lunch for 2. Chicken stew with peas and rice and plantain. Excellent quality and the plantain were marvelous. Perfectly caramelized and not mushy. Chicken was cooked perfectly, very tender and tasty. Spicing was perfect. Ample portion. Also had goat curry. Extremely good. Just spicy enough, but not overly so. Very tender goat. Plenty of meat--goat is usually very sparse and bony. Not this. You could tell it was cooked slowly after being seared first. Came with peas and rice. Had the jerk fries. That was the only less than perfect, mostly because we just didn 't need more starch, not because they tasted wrong. They were fine. Had a Ginger Rum Runner, which was different than the Bermudian kind I am familiar with. Then had the 'banana bread pudding dessert '. OH MY God. It was amazing. More of a walnut bread than banana with 2 giant slices topped with two huge scoops of homemade Vanilla ice cream with caramel drizzle. The two of us couldn 't finish it. Entire meal with 2 drinks and 1 sweet came to $51 with tip and we were stuffed. Best food of the type I have had outside of the Leeward Islands. The owner Pete spent several minutes chatting with us. He is from Trinidad and was the real thing. He loves his food and it shows. We will definitely return.
I have visited at least 3x since moving to Jax and it is delicious each time. The vanilla coconut cake is to die for. If you’re into desert definitely give it a try
