When we expressed our concerns about the small room and our discomfort, the innkeepers became quite unfriendly. We requested a refund and stated that we would look for other accommodations. The wife pleaded with us to stay and offered to upgrade us to a cottage as a gesture of goodwill. Despite her insistence and the kind offer, we decided to stay. The cottage had similar old and mismatched furniture (which looked as if it had been picked up from the street), a window air conditioning unit, and a cracked vanity, but it was significantly more spacious, and we appreciated her thoughtfulness. Upon checkout, however, the husband presented us with a bill for dinner and the room upgrade. This was surprising because his wife had indicated it was a complimentary upgrade. We explained the situation, and he acknowledged it but maintained that they do not provide complimentary upgrades for unsatisfactory rooms (he claimed it was the first complaint he's ever received about room size and furniture, which I find hard to believe). We requested to speak to his wife, but he said she was unavailable and stepped away to call her. He returned and informed us that they were only willing to cover half the cost of the upgrade. We reluctantly agreed, feeling awkward about the situation. While she didn’t explicitly state it was free, we felt somewhat misled since she had referred to it as a gift. UPDATE: Our stay was very recent, and we did not have an updated bathroom. The rooms featured old, mismatched furniture, window AC units, and outdated bathrooms with stained grout. They were very small.

I made a last-minute reservation during our trip to western North Carolina and was lucky enough to secure a spot for Friday night, September 22. This place is truly magical. The food and service are exceptional. I can't wait to come back next year and stay in one of the rooms. I have absolutely no complaints—everything was perfect, which is quite rare to find. Service: 5 stars, Location: 5 stars.

Each day, we used a room in the Spa as our meeting area. This newer building is accessible via a short stone pathway adorned with trickling water, creating such a peaceful atmosphere. The Spa features balcony chairs that allow guests to relax and soak in the tranquility and beauty surrounding them. The views from both the Spa and the Inn, especially in early November, were breathtaking, with vibrant fall colors and hawks soaring above. The breakfast and lunch area is filled with windows, providing more opportunities to enjoy the stunning views as well as the local birds. One evening, we gathered around a large gas fire pit, where we found rocking chairs and swings, along with cozy nooks perfect for reading. The expansive front porch was incredibly welcoming. I stayed in a large cottage with another retreat guest. Although it was bigger than we needed—originally planning for a third person—we loved having the space to chat at night after our daily activities. Plus, it was just a short walk to the main part of the Inn. The rustic furniture might not appeal to everyone (I noticed a negative comment about it in another review), but it was well-maintained and quite comfortable. My vanity had an antique charm that I found beautiful, and surprisingly, I slept exceptionally well, which is rare for me while traveling. I was also captivated by the number of plants around the Inn, including some magnificent blooming Christmas cacti. Their presence reflects the love and care that goes into maintaining this lovely place. The town of Saluda is charming, filled with welcoming shops that greet you as a friend, just like the staff at The Orchard Inn. I definitely need to plan another visit—this time with my husband!
